An apple a day…

Is there anything better than that first bite into a sweet, new season, freshly picked apple or pear?

We’ve all heard that apples and pears are said to be a perfect snack.

They have a great combination of both fibre and slow releasing natural sugars, that can give you a little energy booster for those last afternoon work hours.

They are also naturally high in pectin, especially when stewed with apple cider vinegar and Ceylon cinnamon, which helps feed the healthy bacteria in our gut. Diets high in fruits and vegetables have been shown to increase the number of beneficial bacteria in a person’s gut, and simultaneously reduce the prevalence of harmful bacteria.

For some, they are a nostalgic fruit too, with childhood memories filled with apple picking from the tree outside and taking a sip of freshly made juices.

There’s a reason they are the lunch box fruit of choice for many school lunches! But imagine if your child could taste the organic difference - kids often do, and it’s surprising how many kids willingly devour the apples and pears we give them in store.

Sadly, the tree spraying of conventional apples and pears means synthetic pesticides get funnelled into the middle of the fruit by the core, seeping into the fruit itself. So no, it cannot be “washed off”, and neither can the wax they coat them with either.

Our apples and pears are either from the Adelaide Hills or Flinders Ranges, perfect environments for growing varieties with outstanding quality, vibrance and flavour.

In the Adelaide Hills, we start with Royal Gala and some pear varieties, then come the sweet Fujis, and finally the Pink Lady & Granny Smith. What’s your favourite?

As Autumn and the cooler weather settles in, we welcome a new season of crisp certified organic apples and pears, from Galas, to Grannys and Nashi Pears. The vibrant colour initially catches the eye, but the sweet crunch is what makes everyone coming back for another.

I like to slice apples finely and add them to salads, roast with Autumn veg, make an apple sauce, core & then roast them with honey, ginger, cloves & cinnamon, make your own bircher muesli or bake them into a delicious pie.

And maybe there’s some truth behind an (organic) apple a day keeps the doctor away.. I also don’t think our tasty apples will end up in the bottom of the school bags.

Taste the difference.
